Although always thought of as an abolitionist, Mrs. Stowe deftly develops characters with complex views of slavery, each one a product not only of the environment (slave stare or Northern free, among others) but also of the individual character's individual personality. She develops characters' views on religion and laws (although the law arguments are invariably about slavery).One thing that I won. Stowe did well in conveying what slavery looked like; however I found the discussions with St gip Hearing others discuss this book over the years, I found Uncle Tom not to be an "Uncle Tom" as often a negative connotation, but a person of his time and condition, committed to a higher plane in spite of the situations in which he found himself. I would fall short of sustaining his commitment and faith. The book to me, is less about Uncle Tom as I expected, but more of a discussion on the brutal and inhuman conditions and institution of slavery and the hypocri. A Beautiful Story This is an excellent book, and I am surprised that so few read it.The author speaks to all the different issues regarding slavery right before the Civil War. While it is a fictional story, the author draws from real events that she has heard of or witnessed.
