When I realised this was a follow up of sorts I looked forward to it. What I found frustrating was the beginning seemed so difficult to get into. Kernick has a magic touch when it comes to writing in that fast paced `what's going to happen next' kind of way. His writing is still just as brill. "great British thriller" according to Nick Brett. Another great read from the always reliable Simon Kernick. He does have a regular cast of characters and a couple of them appear in this one, Tina Boyd and Mike Bolt. A phone call to the BBC threatens even more devastating attacks in 12 hours if Britain doesn’t immediately withdraw its troops from Afghanistan and cease support for U.S. Ultimatum has lots of action, but the author’s preoccupation with these issues may leave U.S. So begins a fast-paced tale of terrorism, murder, cops, snitches, undercover cops, and betrayal. readers scratching their heads. Kernick encourages readers to assume the terrorists are “Islamics,” but it becomes clear that the “Brotherhood” is made up of native-born Brits, many of them Afghanistan-war vets who believe the flood of immigrants will destroy white Britain. Most every character, good guy or bad, is either worried or enraged about immigration, and the act seems to besiege every cop and embolden every miscreant. --Thomas Gaughan .
