DESCRIPTION:

Pennock has explored all sides of the ongoing debate, which remains (despite the protestations of many creationists) more about biblical inerrancy than scientific evidence. While not meant to supplant traditional arguments against creationism, Pennock's ideas certainly supplement them and will be useful to educators and researchers alike. Best of all for scientists, though, linguistic change is much more rapid than biological change, and we have actually observed what might be called "speciation events" to have occurred historically in languages. --Rob Lightner. The parallels are striking once we look closely: Genesis proclaims that God created all human languages at one stroke, while modern scientific thought proposes linguistic evolution similar in form to genetics. His sense of urgency is compelling;

"Tower of Babel: Refuting Creationist Babble" according to Carl Flygare. "Tower of Babel: The Evidence against the New Creationism" is a cogent history of creationism and its sophistic spawn "creation science" - and a devastating refutation of the inane bibliolatrous arguments utilized by anti-Darwinists as the gaps available for polemics become increasingly circumscribed by the explanatory power of science. Pennock refutes creationist babble through a novel discussion of linguistic evolution and pays special attention to Paleyesque fallacies embedded in the "Intelligent Design" movement.Penn. Fresh Insights Pennock does a terrific job in Tower of Babel. Many reviews here offer nice detail about the book, so I won't repeat that. Other reviews show the problem with creationist debate itself: people who won't be swayed by evidence - well, they won't be swayed by evidence. That's par for the course and there is not much any writer can do to reach such people.However, Pennock does take an approach that is too rare in these discussions: that creationism of any stripe is harmful to serious theology as well as to public education, . A Great Introduction to Problems with Creationism Having just completed a survey of contemporary creationist literature, I was struck by how little serious scientific response there is to Intelligent Design Creationism, the latest incarnation of Biblical creationism. I guess this is because scientists generally don't take it seriously and they have better things to do. This is unfortunate, since creationism is very widely believed in this country and a number of recent books by creationists have been big sellers. This book should remedy that situation, at least in part.

Pennock explains how science uses naturalism and discusses the relationship between factual and moral issues in the creationism-evolution controversy. One of Pennock's major innovations is to turn from biological evolution to the less-charged subject of linguistic evolution, which has strong theoretical parallels with biological evolution both in content and in the sort of evidence scientists use to draw conclusions about origins Several chapters deal with the work of Phillip Johnson, a highly influential leader of the new creationists. The book also includes a discussion of Darwin's own shift from creationist to evolutionist and an extended argument for keeping private religious beliefs separate from public scientific knowledge..
