DESCRIPTION:
Set in Moscow between the 1982 celebrations for the October Revolution and the death and funeral of Brezhnev, this epistolary novel, through the narrator's reported attempts to visit various friends on the day of the funeral, creates a rumbustious social history of Russia since the Revolution.
"For Scholars of Russian Society Only" according to A Customer. This book was supposed to be a satirical look at Russian life at the end of the Brezhnev era. As I read it, though, I realized that it was largely a string of inside jokes I didn't get. It is written in a slapdash style that probably drips delicious irony for those in the know. For everyone else, is it a truly masochistic experience.
