DESCRIPTION:

Olaf Hendrickson said The olden days are here again. Lee M Hollander presents the old saga's just the way they are. The index, glossary and footnotes are terrific. This is my favorite reference of Old Norse literature. Just wish I had this on pdf.. "Required Reading, but only if you're serious." according to Bookworm. Werner Hertzog recommended this book in his Masterclass on Film Making. And for good reason.. "better translations are available" according to Mark Henderson. Hollander sacrifices accuracy in an attempt to capture the form of the original poetry. He is also fond of using archaic English words - which makes the translation more difficult to read. The book actually includes a glossary of the words used in the translation!First time readers of the Poetic Edda would probably be better off with Larrington's translation.

. Lee M. Hollander was Professor of Germanic Languages at the University of Texas at Austin and an authority in Nordic language and literature

" the translation may indeed be regarded as the crowning achievement of a great scholar." Scandinavian-American Bulletin
