Books like this one with a low level of formatting, make m. "Great History Book" according to William S.. I really enjoyed reading this book. I learned so much about the Navy’s very beginnings. It’s hard to believe that there wasn’t a Navy and how often the government decided we didn’t need one. Volume 1 takes the reader from our fight for freedom in the American Revolutionary War up through the first half of the War of 1812. It also covers our quasi-war with France along with the Barbary Pirates Wars. The book shows how different counties attacked, captured and enslaved our merchant sailors. Reluctantly I purchased this eBook some time back thinking more dry written history about our Navy's' history -----so I laid it aside and put off reading it but I was pleasantly surprised for once I started reading it I couldn't put in down. John J. Willis Abbot use of some old middle English sent me to the dictionary such as the words "poltroonery, pluckily,and penury" that are seldom used today as well as his very picturesque descriptions (types) of sailing ships (Men of War) used back in those days like a Brig, etc. Most naval veterans who were midshipmen may know a lot of this history but for the ordinary B
