DESCRIPTION:
"Just as I remembered it" according to Steve DeLong. Blatty's descriptions of place and of people were spectacular. As an ex-Catholic (now Lutheran) who has experienced questions of faith, the thoughts in the mind of Karras were very powerful and spoke volumes to me. One of the two books I have read that, in places, were so scary that I had to take a break from reading!. A masterpiece that set the bar for everything that followed in the genre. Unforgettable. Nothing previously printed even vaguely approached the terror inspired by the Exorcist. The movie and its effects have largely supplanted the novel in the public mind. Even if you've seen the movie, read the book the layers are well worth the time.. Master L said Still scary!. I give this book 5 stars. It was written Still scary! Master L I give this book 5 stars. The three major television networks carried footage of these events; CBS's Walter Cronkite devoted almost ten minutes to the story. Raw and profane, shocking and blood-chilling, it remains a modern parable of good and evil and perhaps the most terrifying novel ever written.Originally published in 1971, The Exorcist, one of the most controversial novels ever written, went on to become a literary phenomenon: it spent fifty-seven weeks on the New York Times bestseller list, seventeen consecutively at number one. The Exorcist was, and is, more than just a novel and a film: it is a true landmark.Purposefully raw and profane, The Exorcist still has the extraordinary ability to disturb readers and cause them to forget that it is ''just a story.'' (When the author adapted his book to the screen two years later, it then became one of the most terrifying movies ever made.) The deceptively simple story focuses on Regan, the 11-year-old daughter of a movie actress residing in Washington, D.C.; the child apparently is possessed by an ancient demon. Purposefully raw and profane, this novel still has the extraordinary ability to literally shock us into forgetting that it is "just a story." The Exorcist remains a truly unforgettable reading experience. --Stanley Wiater. When originally published in
