Hayan Charara is an absolutely wonderful poet -- this is poetry that really leaps off Hayan Charara is an absolutely wonderful poet -- this is poetry that really leaps off the page, creating incredible impact with a wonderful lack of fuss. This poetry obeys the basic directive made to the artist in the modernist film, _Orphee_: "etonnez-nous" -- astonish us.. "and perfect. Poems here are about domestic violence" according to Rockslinga. This poetry collection is powerful, heartbreaking, necessary, and perfect. Poems here are about domestic violence, America's war on Iraq, the profiling of people of color, drowning women, dogs, cats, and word usage, but they're also about the sinister somethings that our country has done, and allowed others to do. I hope it gets the attention it deserves.. "My personal favorite is Usage and it made me cry" according to Mohammad U. Aijaz. Just read it. This isn't some sugar coated poetry book. My personal favorite is Usage and it made me cry. I'm clearly not a writer, but this book has brought emotions I thought I suppressed. It's haunting, yet beautiful; a true book of love. I recommend this for everyone!

This necessary work is not like any other, from the short surreal poems that come unflinchingly back to specific human truth to the long “Usage” and its Whitmanian catalog of what is done to us with daily language. “Each time I read Hayan Charara’s insightful, tragic, loving book, and am witness myself to his acts of witness, the chill of poetry runs down my spine and up into my scalp. ”—Marilyn Hacker
