DESCRIPTION:

Combining personal testimony, thoughtful commentary and glimpses of social history from archival material, Sex Between Men puts the sex back in homosexual.. From the liberating discovery of "buddies" in the World War II trenches to the brutal repression of the '50s, from the heady possibilities that emerged in the wake of the Stonewall uprising to the hedonistic lovefests and ecstatic extremes of the baths and sex clubs of the '70s, and finally from the psychical and emotional carnage of the AIDS-plagued '80s to the '90s sex clubs, Douglas Sadownick provides a full-scale psychosocial analysis of the sexual behavior of gay men

Michael S. Waren said Great Sex !. A word to describe this book? "Remarkable." One of the few books that after I started it, I looked forward to reading everyday because in my opinion, it says so much. While I have read several books on gay studies for my graduate work this is one that truly makes a difference. Author Douglas Sadownick has wrote a book that gets to the heart of gay studies because it tells the history of gay male culture from a sexual perspective. Too many books i. "Useful and helpful" according to Passion and Science. A useful book about an important topic (at least for gay people - for the gay community that till the very present moment is not spoiled by too many honest scientific works)- useful even if you do not agree with every thesiscommentjudgement. Inspiring and a little bit provocative.. "West Hollywood Space Oddity" according to A Customer. According to Sadownick, all gay men, without exception, are "female spirits inhabiting male bodies." In his eyes, every "authentic homosexual" that has ever lived is a spiritual replicant of Douglas Sadownick.A gay ghetto outlook taken to an almost science fiction extreme.

Douglas Sadownick has written about sex, AIDS, and the gay political movement for The Los Angeles Times, L.A. Weekly, The Village Voice, and The Advocate. His first novel, Sacred Lips of the Bronx, was nominated for a Lambda Literary Award. He lives in Venice, CA.

Sadownick (Sacred Lips of the Bronx, 1994) has combed the archives of modern gay history in search of specific accounts of sexual liaisons and examples of the shifting mindsets of successive generations of gay men. All rights reserved.. From Kirkus Reviews A superfluous survey of gay men's approaches to sexual behavior over the past 50 years. Having established quickly that gay sex in the '50s and '60s was a generally shadowy business, Sadownick fills in the pre-Stonewall period with alternately pointless and overfamiliar anecdotes about the early gay-rights activists, Allen Ginsberg's poetry, and contemporary psychological theories of sexuality. But the past several years have witnessed an unsettling tendency to defy AIDS through unsafe sex and drug use. Beginning with ex-GIs' memo
