Since 1976, fourteen miles of the railroad have been restored to operation. From the state capital at Carson City, V&T rails stretched 66 miles to Virginia City, Reno, and Minden, Nevada. The enormously successful railroad paid its early owners handsome dividends. Serving the transportation needs of the Comstock’s nearly 40,000 inhabitants, the V&T remained in operation until 1950. The Virginia & Truckee is the most famous short line railroad in American history. Ramm I am a big fan and supporter of the Virginia & Truckee Railroad - the famous Nevada shortline that purportedly hauled the equivalent combined weight of all of its' track, locomotives, and rolling stock in silver bars during the heyday of the Comstock silver strike that it was constructed to service. I grew up two blocks from the V&T roundhouse in Reno and my mother took me along for it's last trip to Carson City.
