This is a difficult book to read--it is so bleak and depressing. I can't imagine a more hateful character than Nicholas, and found myself disliking his parents now too because their judgment was so impaired regarding their sons; whereas before, in the earlier books, I was very, very fond of both James and Heloise. In this book, neither has any redeeming characteristics. I was very drawn to Benedict, as I share his love of animals, and was alarmed that Nicholas might harm Benedict's foxes. It is an interesting study of how the branch is bent by parental influence, and als. "#18: 18#18: 1833-1837. There te. "Depressing" according to melody. The most positive facet of this novel was the detailed setting and description of clothing of the period. I can't say I enjoyed reading it. I kept waiting for the novel to improve from the point of view of how depressing it was, but unfortunately that didn't happen. One thing that really annoyed me was the depth of gullibility of one of the main characters, Benedict. Initially, it was perhaps believable, but later became less than credible. I also found the ending less than satisfying.

It is a lonely life and he fears he will never be wealthy enough to marry his new love, Miss Fleetham. Nicholas fears that Benedict is not only a threat to his inheritance but to Morland Place itself, as plans to bring the railway to York will desecrate the estate. The conflict between the brothers mirrors the nation's battle between the old and new, but the Morland feud seems certain to end in tragedy and no-one the victor.. 1833: the industrial age is sweeping through England and the Stephensons are planning the greatest engineering scheme ever undertaken- a railway line from Liverpool to London. At Morland Place, Nicholas had hoped that his brother Benedict, had been banished forever, but railway fever has brought Benedict back to Yorkshire as an engineer on the Leeds & Selby line
