Unfortunately, literature in English translation is frequently taught as if it had been written in English, and students are not made familiar with the cultural, linguistic, and literary context in which that literature was produced. Through works in translation, students in our mostly monolingual society are at last becoming acquainted with the multilingual and multicultural world in which they will live and work. This is a cause for rejoicing. Many instructors have expanded their reach to teach texts that originate from across the globe. Books in translation seldom contain introductory information about the mediation that translation implies or the stakes involved in the transfer of cultural information. Clear and helpful book in a trendy field This is a very down-to-earth book about translation studies, accessible even to someone like me who typically reads no more than one or two books per decade about that topic. The essays in first part of the book address in a general way some of the challenges of teaching literature from translations. Those in the second part focus on aspects of translation from particula. I'd love to get a class set This collection of essays has proven to be an invaluable source for teaching works in translation in my classroom. It provides thought provoking discussion of issues related to translating that my students don't know they should even consider! I'd love to get a class set.
