Here now is the natural sequel, Farnsworth's Classical English Metaphor-the most entertaining and instructive book ever written about the art of comparison.A metaphor compares two things that seem unalike. Farnsworth's book is the finest collection of such figurative comparisons ever assembled. It also explains the different stylistic ways that comparisons can be written, and with what effects. The book starts by dividing the sources of metaphor into families, including nature, architecture, animals, and myth. Farnsworth's Classical English Rhetoric was the definitive guide to the use of rhetorical devices in English. The book provides, along the way, an extraordinarily wide-ranging tour of examples from novelists, playwrights, philosophers, and orators. It then shows how the best writers have put each of those traditions to distinctive use for the sake of caricature, to make an abstract idea visible, to make a complicated idea simple. Lincoln was a master of the art (A house divided against itself cannot stand). So were Jefferson (The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants)

Mathis said Best of its kind. Love this book. It's the best treatment of metaphor from a writer's standpoint that I am aware of. The preface describes it as an OED of comparisons, and that gets the effect right. The first chapter is about using animals to describe people. The second is about using nature to describe abstractions. There's a chapter on human biology, a chapter on architecture, a chapter on mythology, and about ten others. The discussions are illustrated with examples from English literature, and the examples are the best part. They make every page interesting. The book is also beautifully designed in terms o. Jess W. Dixon said Be sure you know what you're buying.. I think I ordered this too quickly, without sufficient investigation. I was looking more for wisdom statements using Metaphor. This could provide some level of mild reading to help fall asleep at night; but I did not buy it to help my writing; but to see how metaphors were used in real wisdom statements by, naturally: wise writers.I do not default Ward Farnsworth, the author. I think I simply mis-understood the actual purpose of the writing itself.. but for me (a casual employer of metaphor) this in some ways made it less immediately useful by making it harder to find the bes PBD It is authoritative, I am sure, and an exhaustive discussion of metaphor, but for me (a casual employer of metaphor) this in some ways made it less immediately useful by making it harder to find the best among the less best if you know what I mean. I probably would make better use of a "Top 10 Metaphor for Dummies" sorry and with all due respect for Famsworth for me it was pearls before swine
