DESCRIPTION:
G P said Five Stars. Superb.. Very good read! This is another very good novel by Duong Thu Huong that I've read. She is the master story teller and her storyline and setting for this novel is no exception. She paints a tale of the lives of the people in Communist-ruled Viet Nam, how their ideal beliefs are betrayed by the harsh reality and the people they loved. A very interesting book!. "Five Stars" according to Summer. good story
Phuong Linh, the heroine of this novel, is compelled to face her illusions and live in truth. She soon discovers that virtually everyone has been corrupted.. The increasingly corrupt Communist regime leads her to a wrenching personal choice: whether or not to divorce her journalist husband
Gradually Linh learns that Nguyen, who now works as a journalist, has become a mere hack for corrupt higher officials, lying on cue. The book does not, however, make Nguyen's redemption the excuse for reuniting the couple. In her revulsion, she separates from him. They live in relative comfort in Hanoi with their daughter, Huong Ly. Linh falls in love with a smooth-talking composer and artist, Tran Phuong, whose libidinal boldness disguises his fundamental timidity. The book follows both Linh and Nguyen through Hanoi society after their breakup. Copyright 2001 Cahners Bu
