POETRY BOOK SOCIETY RECOMMENDED TRANSLATION WINNER OF THE TIMES STEPHEN SPENDER PRIZE 2011 A warrior sets sail for a distant land, to a once great hall plagued by a murderous enemy - the monster Grendel. Written across a range of poetic forms and voices, this rendering captures the thrust and gore of battle, the treasures of the mead-hall, and the sinister dens and moorlands of Dark Age Denmark. Combining faithful translation with innovative versions and poems from alternative viewpoints, Purvis has created an exciting new interpretation of Beowulf - full of verve and the bristle of language.. Can the hero Beowulf defeat his bloody-thirsty foe, save the Geats from being wiped off the map, and claim his just rewards? The Anglo-Saxon epic poem Beowulf is brought to life in a vigorous, contemporary translation by American poet Meghan Purvis

Anita Sullivan said Reading Beowulf at Last. 'Beowulf' is an epic poem that students of English literature all have to read. Even people who love poetry and history (like I do), have found this old poem to be hard to get excited about because it seems to be just an endless list of royal names, interrupted by drinking bouts and lots of bloody bashing with swords. But with Meghan Purvis's translation, the story suddenly comes alive with a stark, chilling magic. I never knew, for example, that Beowulf was an orphan foundling who washed up . J. W. said Refreshing translation. Previously I had only read parts of Beowulf for classes years ago. It was interesting, but a difficult read. I got this version on a recommendation from a friend and I found it a much better read than what I remembered from my school days. Beowulf (at least in this translation) is an engaging story. I was finally able to understand why it's such a classic.. Think you know Beowulf? Think again! Purvis does a tremendous job of modernizing this classic - she has impeccably crafted an enjoyable read while preserving the rich poetry that has withstood the test of time. Whether you loved Beowulf in high school or despised it (I will admit that I was in the latter camp), you must read this for a whole new respect for the epic tale. You will be blown away by this captivating book!
